Web Awareness Barometer – please participate!

This year, which is already beginning to draw to a close, has seen many exciting developments on the Semantic Web, in particular in the area of Linked Data. But, as past technological evolutions have shown: many innovations that researchers and experts get excited about today, won’t even have entered the market the day after tomorrow.

This is why we would like to know how you feel about the state of the Semantic Web in 2008 – which ever position on the web you are hailing from: semantic web practitioner, researcher, or ‘regular’ user.

Please participate in our survey:

Web Awareness Barometer 2008

This is not only an excellent opportunity to give feedback to resarch, development and the industry, but also your chance to win a set of two tickets for the i-Know / i-Semantics conference which is going to take place in Graz in September 2009, worth about € 700. Also, we are giving away three of our Emergency Exit – RDF t-shirts.

The survey is conducted by the Semantic Web Company (i.e. us) in cooperation with Know-Center Graz and the work group Corporate Semantic Web at the Dept. of Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin.

Please take the survey – your participation contributes to gaining a better understanding of the potentials and barriers for the application of new web technologies, in particular of Semantic Web technologies.

The survey will close on Dec 22 – results are going to be published in February 2009. Thank you for your help and cooperation!

TRIPLE-I 2008 ends with a bang, not a whimper

This last day of TRIPLE-I, the conference consisting of three events (I-SEMANTICS,I-KNOW, I-MEDIA) was probably my favourite one, even though I am of course a bit biased: It was Linked Data day, with a keynote by Tom Heath which I will cover in more detail on Monday, but we need to be heading home now.

The key issue for me still is the quest for making the Web of Data a reality, and I once again noted that the main question raised within the Semantic Web community continues to be: “We have such a great technology – why isn’t everybody adopting?” I guess that the answers somewhere are along the lines of this comment from Greg Boutin:

Things will get better as more and more folks get interested in it, and “translators” from the early majority (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_(business) ) start to kick in and explain what this is in plain language.

Defining a process for introducing Linked Data like a new product to the market – that is what I’d like!

The last keynote today was given by Dickson Lukose from the Research and Development agency MIMOS in Malaysia – the Malaysian government seems to be putting a lot of money into IT R & D at the moment. Anyone looking for a good place to get a startup funded might consider doing it in Malaysia!

This blog post concludes with a 12 seconds good-bye message from Michael Hausenblas, saying hello to the web of Data Practitioners Days in Vienna on Oct 22-23, the next SemWeb Community event here in Austria. See you there!

Meet us @ TRIPLE-I 2008 in Graz

From September 3 – 5, 2008 you can meet us at this year’s TRIPLE-I conference. TRIPLE-I is being jointly organised by the Know Center Graz and ourselves (with a lot of help from others) and brings together the former stand alone conferences I-KNOW, I-MEDIA and I-SEMANTICS. The year before we attracted 550 participants comprising researchers and practicioners in the converging fields of knowledge management, new media technologies and semantic systems. One nice USP is the high amount of business people, analysts and consultants from various domains seeking to catch up with latest developments in the field. This year’s program consists of approximately 120 presentations and various transfer and networking events that aim to spread the news and views and get it out of the echo chamber. Key Notes will be held by Tom Heath (Talis), Henry Lieberman (MIT), Dickson Lukose (MIMOS Malaysia) and Peter Kemper (Shell).

Of course I am biased towards the event, but take a look! It’s worth it!

Yes, SWC is a KiWi Project Partner, too

Kiwi Kickoff abl jhSomeone wondered why I was blogging so intensely about the KiWi Project Kick-off: Not only because it is an intriguing project but also, yes indeed, because the Semantic Web Company itself is part of the KiWi Project, and my blogging was not simply the result of some arbitrary interest:-) The main two work packages to which SWC is contributing are Application building (WP6), i.e. the use case scenario which is going to be elaborated in collaboration with Sun Microsystems, and Demonstration (WP9), in particular the Technology Road Show where the project outcomes are going to be presented and demonstrated on-site to potentially interested organisations. I am also going to be involved in Demonstration, but first and foremost in Dissemination (WP8), which is the third biggest work package, and which aims at spreading the word in the scientific community.

But who is the Semantic Web Company (SWC) anyway and what to they do? Continue reading
